HISTORY OF QUINOA

SUPERFOOD USED BY NASA

Ancient Origins: Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) has been cultivated in Peru since pre-Hispanic times, with evidence dating back to around 5,000 B.C.

Center of Origin: The Lake Titicaca basin, spanning Peru and Bolivia, is recognized as the primary center of origin and genetic diversity for quinoa.

Cultural Heritage: This region developed ingenious cultivation systems and a rich culinary tradition that integrated quinoa into daily nutrition for centuries.

Inca Empire Era: During the Inca Empire, quinoa became a cornerstone crop and a dietary staple for the population.

Expansion and Colonial Period: Today, quinoa is grown across several Andean countries; during the colonial era, the Spanish referred to it as “American little rice” or “Inca wheat.”

Modern Recognition: NASA included quinoa in its CELLS program for space missions due to its exceptional nutritional profile and its capacity to provide sustained satiety.

Current Potential: Peru’s vast genetic diversity of quinoa makes it one of the world’s leading producers and exporters, offering significant commercial potential and the opportunity to enhance the livelihoods of high-Andean communities.
